Practicing Faith: Answering the call of God with prayer, then action

The Westerly Sun

It was unbelievable. I just finished punching in my request for an online quote when my phone rang. I answered and was greeted by a nice woman from an auto transport company. Seconds later my phone beeped announcing another call coming in. I let it go to voicemail.

I was looking for a quote to ship my daughter's car from here to Colorado. I had no idea that I was going to become so popular in doing so. For the next 30 minutes I began fielding calls, taking emails and text messages. My phone was buzzing and beeping continually.

I liked the rapid response but I have to confess that it was a bit overwhelming. I found out that these things are handled by a broker who represents a number of companies. He or she spins out the request and it takes on a life of its own. Talk about prayers being answered.

It was nice to have the matter settled in short order. There was no waiting around to see what they would say. I had the numbers in hand that morning and was able to make a decision. It was like it says in the Bible, “Ask and you shall receive.”

Of course many of our prayers don't get answered as quickly as this one did. When you've got a problem we usually say, "Give it to God." Yet, most of us know that the answers often come in God's time. Waiting is often part of the equation. We don't like to wait.

So we tend to use prayer as a last resort. We pray when we've tried everything else and there's nothing left to do. For some, prayer has even become just something to say that sounds religious. It's not taken seriously. That's a mistake. Prayer drives everything.

Prayer is the portal that brings the power of heaven to earth. If you want to see change in your life or the world around you, it begins with tapping into the power and purpose of God. Prayer is the guiding force behind institutional and personal transformation.

Be careful though. As you spend time with God, you might find that he will move you to step out and do something. Prayer inevitably leads to action. God's like that broker I mentioned. He gets the call and puts it out to you and me. So start the day on your knees and let's be the answer to someone's prayer today.
