Do you need health insurance in 2018? If you don’t have affordable health insurance through your job, HealthSource RI is your resource for finding coverage that meets your needs and your budget. But don’t delay — Dec. 23 is the last day to pick and pay for coverage that starts on Jan. 1.
If you already have health insurance coverage through HealthSource RI, you should know that because of some last-minute changes at the federal level, some of your coverage options have changed. The health insurance plan you have for 2017 might be dramatically different in 2018. So, even if you’re happy with your current plan, be sure to actively compare your options for next year. You might even find a plan with better coverage at a lower price.
While you’re comparing your health insurance options, remember that your premium, or the monthly cost of your plan, isn’t the only price to consider. Be sure to also look at how much you have to pay when you get medical services, especially if you expect frequent trips to the doctor, lots of prescriptions, or a new baby next year.
To make comparing your health insurance options easier, HealthSource RI developed a new Savings Tool. This tool, which is available at HealthSourceRI.com/Calculator, makes it possible to factor in your financial situation, expected health needs, and favorite doctors when you’re looking at your health insurance options. You can even compare your choices on the go — the Savings Tool is mobile-friendly and you can send details about each plan to yourself using text or email.

HealthSource RI was created because buying health insurance is complicated. It’s our job to help Rhode Islanders cut through the confusion and choose the best, most affordable health insurance plan possible.
Since our launch, we have decreased the uninsured rate by more than two thirds, and today, 96 percent of Rhode Islanders have health coverage. This year, like every other year, we are here and ready to help. We look forward to serving you.
Zachary W. Sherman is the Director of HealthSource RI, Rhode Island’s state-based health insurance marketplace for individuals and small businesses.
