  • Westerly woman victim of fatal crash

STONINGTON — A young Westerly woman was pronounced dead at the scene of an accident on Pequot Trail Monday morning.

Police said Sarah Delano, 26, of Granite Street was traveling west on Pequot Trail when her passenger vehicle allegedly crossed the median and struck a school bus. The school bus, which had no passengers at the time, was operated by Jane Toth, 69, of Lester Avenue, Pawcatuck. No injuries to Toth were reported.

The accident was reported to police at approximately 7:19 a.m. Pequot Trail was closed until early afternoon.

Stonington Capt. Jerry Desmond said the initial investigation indicated Delano’s vehicle crossed the left of center and struck the school bus, resulting in fatal injuries to the Westerly woman. He said Westerly Ambulance Corps personnel pronounced Delano deceased at the scene.

The Stonington Police Department and Wequetequock Fire Department also responded to the scene. Stonington police and the state Department of Motor Vehicles Commercial Inspection Unit are investigating.

Delano’s body was released to the Connecticut Medical Examiner’s office.
