STONINGTON — A local man is facing charges after police say he was found carrying a loaded pistol in his waistband when he was stopped on suspicion of DUI.

Kyle Matthew Bergel, 22, of 62 Stony Brook Road, was charged Saturday with driving under the influence, failure to drive to the right, and carrying a firearm while under the influence of alcohol.

According to a police summary report, Bergel was stopped by a patrol officer after he was seen crossing the center line and swerving slightly off the edge of the pavement. The officer determined that he showed signs of intoxication and asked Bergel whether he had any weapons.

Bergel told the officer he was carrying a pistol, for which he had a permit. The firearm was a .380-caliber Glock 42. A search of state records revealed that he had proper permits, the police report said, but under state law carrying a weapon while under the influence of drugs or alcohol is a Class B misdemeanor.

Bergel was arrested after he was given a field sobriety test, and was released on a $600 bond. The police took the weapon for evidence. He is due in new London Superior Court for arraignment on Oct. 24, according to court records.
