Kick-off for community rowing center capital campaign rescheduled to Saturday

Record-Journal

STONINGTON — The capital campaign kick-off for the Hart Perry Community Rowing Center has a new date — it’s this Saturday, 5 to 7 p.m., hosted by First Selectman Rob Simmons and his wife, Heidi, at their home at 268 North Main St.

The speaker will be Stephen C. Gladstone, head coach of Yale Heavyweight Crew. In 1970, Gladstone attended Kent School where he met Hart Perry, after whom the rowing center will be named.

In August, Friends of Stonington Crew, a nonprofit that will raise the money to construct the rowing center and dock, set a $2.5 million goal comprising $1.5 million from private donors, $500,000 from community support and special events and $500,000 from corporate partnerships.

The rowing center will be constructed at the Mystic River Boathouse Park, the town’s $2.2 million project currently in the design stage.

The event was originally slated for Sept. 22.
