Road closures, parking bans announced for annual Mystic Irish Parade

MYSTIC — On Sunday, the streets in Mystic will turn green as thousands flock to the annual Mystic Irish Parade. Police in both Stonington and Groton are asking residents to plan ahead and be ready for road and parking restrictions related to the event.

Stonington Police Capt. Todd Olson said in a press release Thursday that several roads in both towns would be shut down, beginning at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday and remaining closed until approximately 30 minutes after the parade has ended.

Road closures on the Stonington side of the Mystic River will include Route 27 from Coogan Boulevard to School Street; Willow Street from Route 27 to Broadway Avenue; Broadway Avenue from Willow Street to East Main Street, and East Main Street from Broadway Avenue to the drawbridge.

Closures on the Groton side of the river will include West Main Street from the drawbridge to High Street; Water Street from West Main Street to New London Road; Pearl Street from West Main Street to Clift Street; and Gravel Street from West Main Street to Clift Street.

Police have also announced a related parking ban for Groton and Stonington on Sunday from 4 a.m. until 4 p.m. Roads affected by the ban include the following:

Route 27 from Coogan Boulevard to School Street; Willow Street from Route 27 to Broadway Avenue; Broadway Avenue from Willow Street to East Main Street; East Main Street from Broadway Avenue to the drawbridge; All of School Street and Brown Street; West Main from the drawbridge to High Street; Water Street from West Main to New London Road; High Street between New London Road and West Main Street; New London Road between West Main Street and High Street; Clift Street for all point west of Pearl Street; Edgecomb Street west of Burrows Street; Library Street between West Main Street and Allyn Street; All of Orchad Lane and Rowland Street.

The parade is scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m. from Mystic Seaport, continuing downtown to the Mystic Arts Center. For more information, visit MysticIrishParade.org.
