Connecticut parks to offer free admission

HARTFORD — Admission and parking fees are being waived for two days throughout Connecticut’s state park system.

On Saturday and Sunday, there will be no charge to visit any of the state’s 107 parks. The initiative, included in Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s proposed budget, is part of the park system’s centennial celebration.

Special programs are planned for the weekend, such as a live reptile show on Sunday at Stratton State park in Simsbury and tours of Gillette Castle in East Haddam, Fort Trumbull in New London, the Heublein Tower at Talcott Mountain State Park in Bloomfield and Simsbury, and the Harkness Memorial Mansion in Waterford.

Malloy said many of the state’s parks have been at or close to capacity on weekends. He urged residents to visit a park “off the beaten path.”
