HARTFORD — Connecticut lawmakers are again trying to ban discrimination against unemployed job seekers.
Advocates say the problem has not gone away even though the jobless rate has fallen from 9.5 percent in November 2010 to 7 percent in February.
A similar proposal failed in 2012.
The legislation would prohibit employers from mentioning in a job ad that being unemployed disqualifies an applicant or indicating that an employer will not consider an unemployed applicant.
House Majority Leader Joseph Aresimowicz says despite the improving economy, “we’ve been hearing more about it.”
Connecticut’s largest business group supports the legislation, but wants lawmakers to remove a provision allowing job hunters to go to court if they suspect discrimination.
The National Conference of State Legislatures says 12 other states are considering prohibitions on employment status in job postings.
