PAWTUCKET — Police in Rhode Island say a woman who was in custody at a hospital tried to escape by climbing up into a dropped ceiling.

WPRI-TV reports that the alleged attempted escape happened shortly after noon Saturday at Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket.

Central Falls Police Chief James Mendonca says the woman, who was allowed to use one of hospital’s bathrooms, tried to climb into the ceiling once she was inside the bathroom.

Mendonca says a police officer prevented her from getting fully into the crawl space. Police say the woman, Alyssa Maurelli, had been picked up on a warrant for failing to appear for a court hearing and other offenses. Court records don’t list an attorney for Maurelli.
