WESTERLY — Michael Cardiff, a member of the Licensing Board, was arrested Tuesday and charged with domestic simple assault/battery.
The arrest, at about 7:09 p.m., followed a complaint from a 61-year-old woman who said Cardiff had shoved her against a wall during an argument, said Westerly Chief of Police Edward St. Clair. The victim did not report any injuries.
Cardiff, 65, of 190 Shore Road, was issued a no-contact order forbidding him from having contact with the victim. He was released on personal recognizance and is scheduled to appear in Fourth Division District Court on May 9.
Cardiff has been a member of the Licensing Board since April 2011. He owns and runs The Villa at Westerly, a bed and breakfast at 190 Shore Road, with his wife, Barbara Cardiff, chairwoman of the Economic Development Commission.
Reached by telephone on Wednesday, Michael Cardiff declined comment.
