  • Man charged with 9 counts of child molestation to start trial

WAKEFIELD — A 40-year-old North Kingstown man, who had been visiting the Whispering Pines Campground in Hope Valley before he was charged with multiple counts of child molestation, is headed for trial in Washington County Superior Court.

Ronald W. Sanford, whose last address was a mobile home on Post Road, has been incarcerated since his arrest in January 2013 on Hopkinton police charges of sexual assault on a 12-year-old boy. He is charged with four counts of first-degree molestation and five counts of second-degree molestation. North Kingstown police also charged Sanford with possession of child pornography. Sanford did not enter a plea during his arraignment last year before Washington County Superior Court Justice Melanie Wilk Thunberg.

Hopkinton police detectives determined the incidents occurred between April 2010 and June 2011. North Kingstown police charged Sanford with the same felony counts based on alleged information garnered through their investigation.

According to a report provided by Hopkinton Police Chief David Palmer, North Kingstown detectives received a complaint from a 14-year-old male on Jan. 12, 2013, saying he had been molested by Sanford during a two-year period while living in North Kingstown and also while at the popular campgrounds with him.

He told Hopkinton police he had been “sexually molested on several occasions by his foster father (now deceased) and his roommate, Ronald Sanford, beginning in the spring/summer of 2010 through the summer of 2011 when he was removed by DCYF (Department of Children, Youth and Families.)”

The alleged victim told detective the abuse began at 12 when he entered Sanford’s camper at Whispering Pines and told him he was “gay.” He alleges that within a few days of that meeting, the “inappropriate” acts began.

Sanford is being represented by Pubic Defender Thomas Tomasian. Sanford was to appear in court on Wednesday, but his appearance was delayed.
