  • Driver in fatal crash charged

RICHMOND — The driver of a pickup truck involved in a rollover crash on Hillsdale Road Friday night was due in court this morning on charges related to the death of one of two passengers.

Zachary M. Thole, 20, of 8 Twilight Trail, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, death resulting, after Richmond police said he lost control of his truck on Hillsdale Road at 7:39 p.m. The truck overturned and pinned Nicholas Gershkoff, 20, of 69 Mesa Drive, North Kingstown, under the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A third passenger, who has not been identified, was taken to South County Hospital where she was treated for minor injuries and later released. Richmond police have not released her name “pending further investigation.”

Police said Thole voluntarily submitted to blood tests at South County Hospital and was subsequently charged with DUI. He was processed at Richmond police station and arraigned before Justice of the Peace Michael J. Robinson. Thole was held on $100,000 with surety bail and transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions.

If convicted, the penalty includes a minimum sentence of 5 years, to a maximum of 15 years, fines ranging from $5,000 to $10,000, and a five-year revocation of driver’s license privileges.
