Delays reported after truck dumps rock cargo along Route 2

STONINGTON — A morning incident involving a dump truck carrying rocks led to delays for motorists along Route 2 after the truck inadvertently spilled its cargo across the road.

Emergency personnel were called to the intersection of Route 2 in the area of Elmridge Road just before 8 a.m. with reports of a truck that had “dumped a lot of rock” across the road. Police and fire units arrived to find that the truck’s cargo let loose at the intersection, leaving a trail of rock along the southbound side of Route 2 from Elmridge Road to the area of Bridge Road. The truck had been driving south when the incident occurred.

There was no damage to cars, injuries or accidents, police said.

Officials were forced to close the road for several minutes to evaluate but have since reopened lanes to northbound traffic. Delays were in place for southbound traffic as a payloader from the Connecticut Department of Transportation worked to help clear debris. Delays were expected through the morning.
