Pawcatuck man charged in bank robbery

WESTERLY — Westerly police arrested the suspect connected with robbing The Washington Trust Company branch at McQuade’s Marketplace on Main Street earlier this week.

Norman C. Renaldi, 40, of 73 Pawcatuck Ave., Stonington, was arrested around noon Friday and taken into custody at the Stonington Police Department, where he is being held as a fugitive from justice, according to Westerly Police Chief Edward St. Clair.

“We had ID’d him as a suspect early on, probably just a few hours after the robbery” St. Clair said.

Renaldi is believed to have left the state for New Hampshire the same day of the robbery. St Clair estimated that he returned to Connecticut on Thursday night.

Police arrested Renaldi in downtown Pawcatuck after obtaining a warrant that allows him to be extradited to Rhode Island to face charges for second-degree robbery.

St. Clair did not know what was recovered in the arrest, but said he expects more information from the case detectives to be available today.

The suspect left the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash on Tuesday morning after giving a note to the bank teller demanding the cash.

No weapon was shown during the robbery.
