MYSTIC — The 40th CROP Hunger Walk will step off from St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl St., Sunday at 1:30 p.m., with registration starting at 1 p.m.

The 6-mile walk begins at the church and follows Route 215 to Noank Baptist Church, 18 Cathedral Heights, Groton, and back again. Refreshments will be available in the Vestry at Noank Baptist church.

The Rev. Adam Thomas, rector of St. Mark’s, said the walk is intended to remind participants of the physical distances many people around the globe must travel to get food.

“We walk in solidarity with people around the world who have to walk long distances for food and water,” he said. “We have cars and grocery stores but many people around the world have to travel by foot for their food; this walk is intended to honor their experience.”

CROP stands for Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. The walk’s local sponsor is Mystic Area Ecumenical Society. Church World Service will receive 75 percent of the funds raised and Mystic Area Shelter and Hospitality will receive 25 percent.
