Bus driver injured after windshield shatters

WESTERLY — A bus driver for the Rhode Island Public Transport Authority was transported to The Westerly Hospital on Friday afternoon after glass from her shattered windshield lodged in or near her eyes.

Westerly police, along with members of the Westerly Ambulance Corps and Dunn’s Corners Fire Department, responded to a call for help around 1 p.m. on Friday in the Walmart parking lot on Post Road, according to Sgt. David Turano.

The female driver was driving the bus on her route along Post Road when part of the front windshield inexplicably shattered, leaving fragments of glass in or around her eye, Turano said.

The driver pulled over into the parking lot of the Westerly Walmart after the incident.

She was transported by ambulance to Westerly Hospital, according to the police report, which did not specify what happened to the bus and its passengers after the driver was taken away. The cause of the windshield shatter is still unknown.
