Letter: DiBello settlement was the right thing to do

The Charlestown Town Council has voted to settle the pending litigation DiBello v. Charlestown.

The Town Council unanimously agrees that settlement of this litigation is the right thing to do for the Town of Charlestown and Ms. DiBello and will put aside a lengthy, costly and emotional court case for all parties.

Neither the current town council members nor the town administrator participated in the initial dispute, which was the basis for the litigation.

The total settlement amount is $450,000, a portion of which is Ms. DiBello’s attorney costs.

The town’s contribution is $400,000, of which $382,957.82 comes from the existing Legal Contingency Fund. The remaining $50,000 will come from the town’s insurance company, The Rhode Island Interlocal Trust. The settlement has no impact on the Town of Charlestown tax rate.
