Letter: Debates would help inform electorate on issues

Concerning the importance of an informed electorate, we join Mr. Anthony in his letter to the Westerly Sun of Aug. 10 urging that voters educate themselves about issues before this November’s elections.

We encourage organizations such as the Westerly Sun and the League of Women Voters to sponsor several candidate debates, in addition to the one traditionally sponsored by the Westerly-Pawcatuck Chamber of Commerce.

We’d also like to suggest that these several debates be televised and scheduled at least a week to 10 days before the election with a format allowing for questions from the audience.

Hopefully these debates will not only educate the Westerly electorate but increase voter turnout on election day.
