Letter: Hillary can’t be blamed for immigrant crisis

Hindsight is 20/20 and maybe Hillary Clinton doesn’t cut it as a fortune-teller but The Westerly Sun July 30 editorial “Hillary’s real scandal Honduras, not Benghazi” is worth examining as the Honduran refugee crisis deserves our full attention, but it does not deserve a time machine look-back five years after the fact.

There are problems everywhere in the world, including here in America, and the role of Secretary of State is to 1) Follow the directives of the President and 2) Advance international relations addressing injustices and inequality abroad as both the President and Secretary of State see fit. One of the 14 Secretary of State job responsibility descriptions listed in state.gov/secretary is, “Serves as the President’s principal adviser on U.S. foreign policy.” But “Forecasting refugee crises five years down the road” is not among them.

According to the logic blaming Hillary Clinton for the Honduran refugee crisis, do we blame Adam Lanza’s elementary school teachers and psychologist(s) in Newtown for the Sandy Hook tragedy?

Further, if the author thinks it just to hold someone accountable for something that was possible but unknowable five years later, would the writer like to tell us the 2019 scandals and tragedies we can prevent if only we’d address these challenges today?

Yes I agree with the title implying that Beghazi is not a real scandal (an action or event regarded as morally or legally wrong and causing general public outrage), but is it a coincidence this “Other Words” column sits on top of Mike Luckovich’s great cartoon of talking heads [imported from Right Wing Radio?] moaning “Benghazi,” now defined as: To express anger, frustration, outrage, etc. at a lack of actual Obama scandals,” which is actually quite telling. “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” is practical advice, but modern-day Republicans are stuck between a rock and a hard place unable and unwilling to do either.

So what to do? With apparently no plan of their own except to say no to everything save cutting taxes, they cling to inventing scandals hoping one of them will stick: IRS “scandal” = fail; Benghazi = nowheresville; Bundy Ranch = racist burnout; Bergdahl Swap = fizzled out in a week; Obamacare won’t help anyone – yeah, no one except the estimated 10 million Americans who now have health insurance because of Obamacare; etc. It’s been said Mideast peace will remain impossible as long as the Arabs hate the Jews more than they love their kids, which is what we have with the GOP hating the black man from another country and women more than they love this country, driving a scandal machine that works non-stop to demonize Obama ... up next, Hillary?
