WESTERLY — Local residents can learn the basics of backyard composting during two workshops scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. and Friday at 1 p.m. at Tower Street School Community Center.
The free workshops will be presented by the town and the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation
Composting has the duel benefit of reducing a household’s volume of trash and giving homeowners a source of rich organic material for use in gardens and yards, said Mike Serra, the town’s recycling coordinator and minimum housing director.
“It’s all in an effort to reduce waste, that’s why we’re bringing these workshops to Westerly,” Serra said.
Residents will have an opportunity to win two compost bins that will be raffled off at the end of each session. A limited number of other compost bins will be available to purchase at a reduced price.
Refreshments will be served at the workshops by Maize-n_Manna, the High Street health food restaurant.
Pre-registration, through the town’s website at www.townofwesterly.com, is required.
