Woman arrested after sideswiping car on Winnapaug Road


WESTERLY — A Pawtucket woman was arrested by Westerly police on Wednesday after her car sideswiped another vehicle on Winnapaug Road, injuring the driver.

Tonisha K. Acevedo, 22, of 93 Maynard St., Pawtucket, was charged with duty to stop, accident resulting — personal injury or death.

Police responded to a call shortly before 5 p.m. on Winnapaug Road near its intersection with Lancaster Road, according to Chief Ed St. Clair. According to a police report, Acevedo is believed to have strayed over the center line of the road, hitting an oncoming vehicle driven by a 78-year-old Westerly woman. The Westerly woman sustained injuries to her arm and face which St. Clair described as “non-life threatening,” as well as damage to her car.

The woman was transported to Westerly Hospital by ambulance, where she was treated for her injuries and released.

Acevedo was uninjured in the accident, and her vehicle was drivable, St. Clair said. Police did not find drugs or alcohol to be involved in the accident, according to the police report, which named the cause of the accident as simple distraction by Acevedo.
