At least four rescue units were called to a multi-vehicle crash on Route 1 (Post Road) in Charlestown late this afternoon.
Five of those injured in the crash at East Beach Road were taken to The Westerly Hospital’s emergency room, reportedly with minor injuries, and two to South County Hospital, also with minor injuries, at about 4:30 p.m., said Police Lt. Patrick McMahon, who also heads the Charlestown ambulance corps.
Meanwhile, Westerly Hospital notified Charlestown officials that its emergency waiting room as well as its treatment rooms were full, but the Westerly hospital accommodated the incoming patients whose injuries were not critical .
The accident in Charlestown was one of several in the area during the day. About a half-hour earlier a minor car/motorcycle crash occurred on Montauk Avenue in Misquamicut. Those involved in the crash refused medical treatment.
Several other crashes occurred throughout the region, sending patients to area hospitals and keeping emergency personnel and police busy throughout the weekend. Interstate 95 was the scene of several mishaps, in both Connecticut and Rhode Island. No fatal injuries were reported, but traffic tie-ups due to the crashes, along with heavy summer beach traffic, resulted in long delays for motorists.
