Letter: With Council, is freedom ringing in Westerly?

A majority on the Westerly Town Council has succeeded in usurping the Constitution and robbing us of the freedoms which millions of Americans have fought and died for: freedom of enterprise (via their anti-vendor ordinance) and freedom of speech (by asking WBLQ radio not to be critical of them for passing such an ordinance).

Lack of freedom serves as a conduit to unethical behavior, discrimination, separatism and corruption. Diana Serra voted in an ordinance favoring her family’s ice cream store on Atlantic Ave. Pat Douglas called a 10-year vendor a “transient” while she, being from New York, should know this area thrives on tourism from all over New England. Council members continue to hide under the false pretense of safety and “not liking the way vendors look.”

These councilors should be reported to the ethics committee for their illegitimate use of government power and for their direct violation of the 14th amendment to the United States Constitution, which states, “laws which deter competition simply to benefit those entities already operating, are not legitimate exercises of state power.” Westerly, your liberties are in jeopardy, should this council be allowed to stay in power.

Remember this come November. Election Day is your Independence Day.
