WESTERLY — An Ashaway Road man was arrested twice Sunday evening after firing a shotgun in his backyard.
Police were called to 97 Ashaway Road at 7:20 p.m. after receiving a report of gun fire. The call came from the driver of a car who had stopped in front of the house to ask for directions.
When police arrived, they learned that David J. Castanho, 27, who was distraught because his dog had been run over by a car the day before, had fired three shotgun blasts into an earthen berm in his backyard. He was arrested for firing a gun in an area of town that doesn’t allow gunfire.
After Castanho was released and returned to his home, the police received a call at 10:43 p.m. that Castanho was creating a disturbance at his home. He was arrested again, this time for disorderly conduct, and brought to a hospital for observation.
