Westerly police chief after rash of thefts: ‘Lock your cars’

WESTERLY — Police Chief Edward A. St. Clair said Thursday there has been a sharp increase in thefts from unattended vehicles in all sections of town, and in every case the vehicle was unlocked.

“It is important to remember to lock your cars when unattended, particularly overnight,” St. Clair said Thursday. He said other preventive measures include parking in a well-lit area and not leaving valuables in a vehicle. If you leave items in a vehicle, such as iPods, GPS units, or any other electronics, you should store them where they are not visible.

St. Clair said the Westerly Police Department has made several arrests with the assistance of witnesses who have reported seeing something suspicious in their neighborhood, adding, “any suspicious activity should be reported to the police no matter how insignificant you think it may be.”

Westerly Police can be contacted at 401-596-2022 or a message can be left on the tip line at 401-348-6131.
