Letter: Let’s get the facts straight on NS spending

I’m writing this as a very upset and concerned taxpayer. It’s about time somebody told us about the whole picture.

Shame on Dan Spring and the North Stonington Board of Finance for not giving the people what they can really expect. Our mill rate will be over 32 mills if this vote goes through. Did they forget to tell us about the $6.3 million fire complex that has already been approved? What about money to pay for Hewitt Dam that the selectmen have already put out for bid? What about the Boombridge project that is in the works? Remember, we will be paying for these projects for the next 20 years!

We also have a town hall that is outdated and will need lots of work and money. Shame on Superintendent Peter Nero and the Board of Education with their misinformation and bullying tactics! Remember at the first town meeting Nero said “there is no Plan B, it is all or nothing.” Then lo and behold, one short meeting later, and it’s $5 million less, and we do have a Plan B! Not much thought or planning put into this!

Each year enrollment in our schools is less. We don’t need more buildings. We need to fix what we have. Safety is top priority.

Come back with a plan to fix and update what we have and what we can really afford! Ask us for around $10 million for repairs and we’ll support this 100 percent! I’m all for eduction, let’s just make it affordable.

Remember folks, figures don’t lie!

Contrary to what we’ve been told, if this doesn’t pass we will not lose our accreditation, and we will not have to board up our buildings and send our kids away.

Let’s take back our town and demand that these elected officials are here to look out for our best interests!

Bob Beattie
