Letter: Koch brothers call on government when needed

The Westerly Sun’s May 23 “Koch Brothers rev up high-octane hypocrisy” editorial calls it hypocrisy, which it most certainly is, but I think it’s remarkable that it touches on all entries from the dreaded “D” list and thank you Jim Hightower for exposing this disaster in the making.

The Koch Brothers’ multibillion dollar empire was built on fossil fuel extraction which is also the building blocks of our climate change “Nightmare on Main Street” with their solar energy opposition showing no shame considering it’s: (1) Dishonest: We are always against government intervening in the market (except when it protects our income — fossil fuel subsidies range from $14-52 billion annually to an industry that made $271 billion in 2012 profits in the U.S. and Canada) but yes, of course we need to tax homeowners for their solar energy production. (2) Deceit/Deception: Pretending that the market must be free of government interventions when the Koch Brothers true intentions is to ensure the market is free of competitors that threaten their income. (3) Double-Standard: Government must never interfere in the market place if it threatens our prosperity but government must always get involved to limit competition if it threatens our prosperity. (4) Duplicity: We must have the government stay out of the market but we also must have the government intervene in the market when the free market produces a product, in this case solar energy, that’s a superior product that will undermine us.

Any one of the D’s must make you suspicious but when you get all four, it makes me think how Koch rhymes with joke but nothing’s funny about fossil fuel usage causing inevitable 6-10 ft sea level rise in the next couple centuries.

The writing is on the wall with options limited.

How refreshing to expose questionable behavior that’s selfishly small-minded, contradicting a lifetime of opposition to government regulation intended to save our climate, which the Kochs threaten every day.

On May 21, Pope Francis became the latest climate advocate imploring us to “Safeguard Creation. Because if we destroy Creation, Creation will destroy us! Never forget this!” Or if you are Charles and David Koch, don’t hear it in the first place. Solar energy is the future, which can be visited today. Westerly High School has a series of solar powered emergency phones around the exterior of the school that would be taxed and regulated if the Koch Brothers had their way.
