MYSTIC — As Christopher and Lynn McDonnell, and son Jack cut the ribbon marking the opening of the playground named after their daughter Grace, clouds parted and brilliant sunbeams shone from the dark grey sky seemingly just for the occasion.
It was the culmination of a very emotional weekend which when all was said and done, could not have gone any better.
Sunday morning marked the opening of the Grace Audrey McDonnell Playground located at Williams Beach, near the Mystic YMCA. McDonnell, who loved to paint and adored the beach, was one of the 20 children who lost their life in Newtown on Dec. 14, 2012.
The opening ceremony was Mystic at its best, a vibrant community that pulled together to give the McDonnell family the tribute they deserved.
