WESTERLY — A 24-year-old Westerly man was charged Monday with cyberstalking after an investigation by Westerly police into a number of alleged harassing text messages and phone calls sent to a local woman.
Police indicate they stopped William C. Gavitt, of 31 Robin Hollow Way, Apt. B, on an alleged motor vehicle violation and realized a warrant had been issued for his arrest on the misdemeanor charge.
The alleged victim said she had been having an ongoing problem with calls and texts to her home and cell phone and had previously reported the situation to police. She said he had his number blocked, but he continued to call from a withheld number. The messages, according to the police report, contained photos of Gavitt in which he threatens himself and promises action if the woman calls police.
Rhode Island State Police later contacted Gavitt at his workplace to ensure he was safe. He was issued a summons to appear in 4th Division District Court.
