Police: Rash of burglaries may be connected

A rash of commercial burglaries that took place overnight Sunday into Monday have area police departments wondering if the crimes are related.

“There may have been a string of them along the shoreline,” said Stonington police Capt. Jerry Desmond, adding that the police departments are working with each other to examine the evidence and compare leads.

In Stonington, Seafood Etc. and Stonington Pizza Palace, both along Route 1, were burglarized. Desmond urged anyone with information to contact Stonington police at 860-599-4411.

Next door in Westerly, Ella’s Fine Food & Drink and The Sea Goose Grill & Raw Bar, also both along Route 1, were hit. Police Chief Edward St. Clair said the break-ins were reported to police Monday morning.

“There’s been a string of them in the area and beyond,” he said.

St. Clair encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity they see.

“If you see something, say something,” he said. “There’s a lot more eyes and ears out there than our own patrol officers.”

Anyone with information should call the Westerly police at 401-596-2022.

There was one break-in in Richmond, according to Chief Elwood M. Johnson Jr. The alarm at a local restaurant went off at 5:21 Monday morning, he said, and the perpetrator or perpetrators were gone when officers arrived at 5:29 a.m. Glass in the restaurant’s door had been broken in, he said, but nothing was stolen.

Hopkinton is also working with the other towns, after a break-in of the Pavilion Steak House in Ashaway.

Chief Jeffrey S. Allen of Charlestown said they had no reports of burglarized businesses on Monday.
