13-year-old injured after small explosion in basement

OLD MYSTIC — A 13-year-old male was treated at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London Sunday night after suffering minor injuries in an explosion in the basement of his home.

Stonington police said the boy, who lives at 1299 Old Pequot Trail, had found some black powder in the basement of his home Sunday evening at about 5:45 and decided he would light it “to see what it would do.”

The powder, probably from a hunting rifle, police said, caused a minor explosion.

Old Mystic Fire Department personnel were also on the scene, but reports indicate damage to the structure was also minor.
