Man found in parking lot with ‘very significant’ injuries


CHARLESTOWN — A South Kingstown resident was last reported in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital after being found injured in the parking lot of The Charlestown Rathskeller early Sunday morning. An update on his condition was unavailable as of this morning.

Shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, the Charlestown Ambulance Rescue Service received a call about a man lying face-down in the parking lot outside the restaurant, according to Chief of Emergency Medical Services Patrick McMahon. When an EMS crew arrived on the scene, they found Sean Newton, of South Kingstown, unconscious and bleeding from his face, and described his injuries as “very significant.” A Life Star helicopter was called to take Newton to the Trauma Division of Rhode Island Hospital.

Newton was said to have been drinking prior to the incident, but McMahon did not disclose his blood alcohol content.

Charlestown Chief of Police Jeffrey Allen said the “unfortunate accident” is still under investigation, though it has been determined that no foul play was involved.
