  • Police say 1,400 stolen hats discovered in home

WAKEFIELD — A man wanted by South Kingstown police on a warrant was also arrested by Westerly police when they accompanied them to a local home.

Armed with a warrant charging Mark L. Pates, 28, who was staying at 87 Bowling Lane, with breaking and entering a house on May 24 with felonious intent in South Kingstown, police went to the house Wednesday. He is charged with stealing a pair of weeks-old pit bull puppies.

Once in the home, Westerly police say they discovered 1,400 snap-back style baseball hats allegedly stolen from Fabrigraphics in Pawcatuck in June. The hats are estimated at more than $36,000. Westerly police charged Pates with receiving stolen goods, a felony.

Pates did not enter pleas on either charge before Judge Pamela Woodcock-Pfeiffer in 4th Division District Court.

Because Pates is on probation for a previous drug conviction, he was scheduled to appear in Superior Court on violation of probation charges.
