Deer runs into side of school bus

WESTERLY — A deer ran into the side of a Westerly school bus early Tuesday morning, surprising the occupants and damaging the vehicle, but no one was hurt.

Bus driver Matthew Lariviere, 44, of Westerly, was driving the bus with Westerly middle and high school students on Potter Hill Road near Randeau Passage at about 7 a.m. when the accident occurred, police said.

Lariviere told police he caught a glimpse of something as he was driving and the next thing he knew a deer had run into the side of the bus. He said he was not injured. The 11 students, who were seated in the back of the bus and away from the impact area, were also uninjured.

The bus sustained damage to the driver’s side front, including dents and two broken windows, according to a police report.

Students were transferred to another bus. Lariviere was able to drive the bus from the scene.
