R.I. attorney general warns of jury duty scam

Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin is warning Rhode Islanders of a new scam in the area, where people are being threatened with imminent arrest for failure to appear for jury duty, and are offered the opportunity to “post bail” by paying a certain amount with a credit card.

The scam artist claims to be from a local county sheriff’s office, has personal information about the individual, such as name and address, and appears to be calling from a phone number with a local area code.

Those who have been contacted report that the caller gets aggressive and threatening when questioned about the claims, often indicating they will be arriving at the home shortly to make the arrest.

Kilmartin is urging anyone who receives a similar phone call or threat to contact their local police to report the incident.

“While it is more likely than not this scam is being operated outside Rhode Island, the quickest way to stop it from spreading is to be aware of their tactics and inform law enforcement,” Kilmartin said in a press release.

Math, English tutors needed for GED students

WESTERLY — Literacy Volunteers of Washington County is looking for math tutors for students working toward their GED.

They are looking for volunteers with some math tutoring or teaching expertise. Individuals with strong math skills are also welcome and will receive training. Jonnycake Center looking for volunteers

WESTERLY — The Jonnycake Center of Westerly is looking for volunteers to support its various holiday programs. Each year, the center provides Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets for more than 450 local families, as well as children’s Christmas gifts through its Adopt-a-Family program.

Volunteers are needed from October through November to assist clients with the paperwork needed to sign up for these programs.

Flea market fundraiser at VFW

PAWCATUCK — The Ladies Auxiliary of the Pawcatuck Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1265, 160 South Broad St., is holding an Old & New Flea Market on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The market will help to raise funds for the veterans and the post.

Fire Prevention Week open house for all ages

HOPE VALLEY — The Hope Valley-Wyoming Fire District’s annual National Fire Prevention Week Open House will be held at the district’s main station, 996 Main St., on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The district’s fire prevention officers will present the poster contest winners, preschool through 4th grade, with their awards at 1 p.m.

All residents and businesses are invited to learn more about what services are available to them both for emergency and non-emergency needs.

Fire prevention and fire safety material will be available for all ages, as well as visits with Smokey Bear and Blaze the Fire Dog.

New member applications will be available for firefighters, junior firefighters, and auxiliary members.

Annual Fall Festival back in Groton

GROTON — Groton’s Annual Fall Festival will be held at Poquonnock Plains Park, Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival is a community event created and sponsored by the Groton Business Association of the Greater Mystic Chamber of Commerce.

The festival will offer a variety of entertainment. Featured will be children’s entertainer Steve Elci and Friends, guitarist Lou Manzi, April’s Balloons, and Simply Enchanted. Groton’s fire departments will celebrate Fire Prevention Week with special displays, exhibits, and vehicles.

The event will be held rain or shine. Admission is free.

Zumba Party in Pink for charity

MYSTIC — A Zumba Party in Pink drop-in charity event will take place at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio,12 Roosevelt Ave., on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There is a $15 donation and all proceeds will be donated to Zumba Global Grant for Breast Cancer Prevention and the Terri Brodeur Breast Cancer Foundation.

There will also be numerous raffle prizes donated by local merchants.
