WESTERLY — Westerly Community Credit Union will celebrate its 65th anniversary at its four branches, located in Westerly, Richmond and South Kingstown, on Tuesday, Oct. 15. An anniversary celebration cake will be served for WCCU members at each location. In addition, a two months-long membership promotion offers members the opportunity to refer their friends and family to join. If they do, they both will be entered into a weekly drawing for their chance to win $65. All members who refer a new member will also be entered for a chance to win $650 in the month-end drawings.
WCCU began in 1948, when a group of like-minded people met in a borrowed office in the old Opie building on High Street in Westerly. Using a card table as a desk, they formulated plans to establish a member-owned credit union, pooling their assets to provide loans and other financial services to each other. By the end of the meeting, 23 people had deposited $169.25 in share (savings) accounts and what is today the Westerly Community Credit Union was born. One week later, the credit union granted its first loan, in the amount of $120.
From those beginnings and 65 years later, WCCU has evolved into a full-service $222 million financial institution with over 15,800 members.
Steve White, WCCU’s president and CEO stated, “We are proud to be celebrating our 65th anniversary. Westerly Community Credit Union’s primary goal of helping our members achieve financial success is what motivated us in 1948, and continues to motivate us today. We are thankful having spent these past 65 years as a locally owned and operated credit union, and we look forward to serving our local communities, organizations and schools in the future.”
Credit union membership is available to anyone who works or lives in Rhode Island or New London County, Conn., and opens a share savings account with $5. For more information, contact WCCU at 401-596-7000 or visit www.westerlyccu.com.
