Charlestown man charged in hit, run

CHARLESTOWN — A local man is facing several charges following a hit-and-run accident on Route 2 by Shannock Road.

According to Charlestown police, a 1995 Ford Econoline van driven by Charles Allen, 52, of Charlestown, rear-ended a 1996 Jeep Cherokee driven by Donna Benisch, 57, of Middletown, at around 4:40 p.m. on Friday. Allen allegedly fled the scene of the accident, but was found a short distance away.

Benisch was transported to South County Hospital by Charlestown Ambulance with complaints of neck and back pain.

Allen was charged with felony hit-and-run with injuries and driving without a license. He was also wanted on a bench warrant from 4th Division District Court for a previous charge of driving without a license. He allegedly told police that he fled the scene because he didn’t have a driver’s license.

Police said there was no evidence that Allen was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
