Early morning fire destroys barn, kills 2 horses in Hopkinton


HOPKINTON — A barn was destroyed and two horses were killed in an early morning fire at 24 Prospect Square.

Charles and Vicki Burnett own the barn but not the horses, which belong to their daughter Janice Drummond.

The 4:50 a.m. fire, believed to have been triggered by lightning, was called in by Vicki Burnett.

“The men were still at the station, so we had a quick response, but the barn was fully involved when we got there,” Hope Valley Fire Chief Fred Stanley said.

Earlier this morning, at around 3:30 a.m., lightning hit the fire alarm at Canonchet Farm, but there was no fire there, according to early reports.
