  • New board of directors named for Westerly Hospital

NEW LONDON — A local accountant will serve as chairman of the new Westerly Hospital board of directors.

Stephen Greene, a principal of the accounting firm Pucci & Greene, was elected Monday evening to serve as chairman of the 11-member board. He served previously as a member of The Westerly Hospital Foundation Board.

The Westerly Hospital was sold to Lawrence + Memorial of New London on June 1, ending the Westerly institution’s 18-month period under the protection of financial receivership. Westerly’s former board instructed former hospital President and CEO Charles Kinney to seek receivership protection for the insolvent hospital as a means to protect its dwindling assets and possibly preserve its mission as a community hospital.

Representatives of the Westerly service area were also named to the L+M Healthcare board of directors, the board that governs L+M Healthcare, the nonprofit parent organization of the two hospitals.

Deborah Lamm, also a former member of The Westerly Hospital Foundation Board, was named vice chairwoman of the new Westerly Hospital board of directors. Lamm is a resident of Westerly and New York City. Steve Ruzzo, a Westerly resident and retired director of strategic planning at General Dynamics/Electric Boat, will serve as treasurer.

Ann Lain, a Westerly lawyer, is the new board’s secretary. Thomas Liguori, house counsel for the Cherenzia Companies, was named as an at-large member of the board along with Richard Smith, former chairman of the Town of Westerly’s Finance Board, and Corinne Rossi, owner of Better Body Works, a massage, bodywork and personal training facility in Pawcatuck.

Ruzzo, Lain, Liguori and Smith all served on the Westerly Area Residents Committee, a group that monitored and help guide the hospital through receivership. The committee was granted standing in Rhode Island Superior Court and was praised by Associate Justice Brian Stern for helping to save the hospital and bring about a positive resolution to the receivership.

Three doctors were also named to the board: George Bourganos, immediate past president of The Westerly Hospital medical staff and a resident of Stonington; William Conlin, president of The Westerly Hospital medical staff and a resident of Wakefield; and Adrian Hamburger, vice president of The Westerly Hospital medical staff and a resident of Westerly. Bruce D. Cummings, L+M president/CEO, will also serve as a member of the board.

The Westerly service area representatives named to the L+M Healthcare board of directors are: Dr. Christopher R. Jalbert, chief of The Westerly Hospital’s hospitalist service and a resident of Westerly; Jon T. Kodama of North Stonington, owner of JTK Management, which owns several restaurants in the region; and Lisa Konicki, executive director of the Greater Westerly-Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce and a resident of Pawcatuck.

Cummings said the boards will play an important role for the hospitals and their corporate parent. “Healthcare, as we know, is an ever-changing environment,” he said. “Therefore, it is absolutely crucial that we have leadership and governance teams in place that have the vision and energy to position our community-oriented ‘system of care’ for success. I am confident in each of these boards of directors, and I am gratified for their willingness to serve as we pursue our overall goal of improving the health of the region.”
