In the Easy Chair: Sam Falcone

AGE 90 on July 1.

OCCUPATION Retired from our family business, the painting and paperhanging business started by my father in 1929.

RESIDENCE Westerly.

BORN, RAISED & GREW UP IN Born in Pawcatuck, moved to Westerly when I was a year old and lived here in Westerly ever since — 89 years.

FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND MY TIME Reading. And, at my age, watching TV.

PROUDEST ACCOMPLISHMENT Helping with the restoration of the fountain in Wilcox Park as president of the Westerly Lions Club; serving on the Westerly Town Council that initiated a charter form of government and the hiring of a town manager; and serving as chairman of the Westerly Republican Town Committee.

WHAT I HOPE TO BE REMEMBERED FOR Setting a good example.

TOP ITEM ON MY BUCKET LIST I’m too old for a bucket list.

ALWAYS IN MY POCKET A handkerchief and a hard candy.

WHAT I WANTED TO BE WHEN I GREW UP An accountant.

PERSON OR EXPERIENCE THAT HAS INFLUENCED ME THE MOST My father, Carmino was his real name. I’ve never forgotten the things he taught me. He came to this country when he was 16 years old, all by himself. He had four years of schooling but established a business and never relied on assistance — even during the Depression. Back then people bartered for what they needed.

FAVORITE BOOK “Unbroken,” by Laura Hillenbrand.

FAVORITE AUTHOR James Patterson.

LAST BOOK READ I’m reading “Reagan: A Life in Letters.”

FAVORITE SONG “On the Wings of a Snow-White Dove.”

FAVORITE MOVIE “Gone with the Wind.”

FAVORITE TV SHOW Comedy shows and “Law & Order.”

FAVORITE PET Misty, our Irish setter.

FAVORITE FOOD Anything Italian.

AMOUNT OF TIME I SPEND A DAY ON FACEBOOK None. Zero.

TRAIT I MOST ADMIRE Honesty, and when people are straightforward.

PET PEEVE Impatient drivers, especially when someone gets behind me when I’m stopped behind someone who’s stopped and they start honking the horn.

FAVORITE QUOTATION “You can tell a lot about a man by the shake of his hand.”

MY FAVORITE THING ABOUT OUR LITTLE CORNER OF THE WORLD There are so many things — our beautiful library, the wonderful park, the architecture of the town hall, Christ Church and The Washington Trust building. The way people keep and take pride in their homes. I always tell people that it’s “God’s little acre.”

CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT My family. My wife, Rose — we’ve been married 63 years. My children, my grandchildren and my great-grandchildren.

LITTLE-KNOWN FACT ABOUT ME My real name is Salvatore.

BEST ADVICE I’VE EVER RECEIVED Was from my father: When you do a job, do it right the first time, even if it takes longer. That way you won’t have to do it a second time, which will take twice as long.

ADVICE I BEST LIKE TO GIVE Live every day of your life to the best of your ability.

IF I RULED THE WORLD I WOULD Help children in need … the children with cancer, or like the little girl who needed a lung transplant, or the children who need help from the Shriners and St. Jude.

IF I WON THE LOTTERY, THE FIRST THING I WOULD DO IS Establish a trust fund for my grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

I DRIVE A 2007white Grand Marquis.

I WISH I DROVE Nothing.

ALWAYS IN MY FRIDGE Wine and cheese.

IF I COULD HAVE DINNER AND A CONVERSATION WITH ANYONE IN THE WORLD I WOULD CHOOSE My daughter, Deborah. She was a nurse who was always thinking about other people. She passed away when she was 57.

— Interview conducted and edited by Nancy Burns-Fusaro
