WESTERLY — One person was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries and police temporarily closed a portion of Route 3 on Friday morning after a crash involving an SUV and a trailer carrying a small front end loader.

Westerly police, fire and ambulance personnel were dispatched around 9 a.m. after reports of an accident with a “fluid spill” near the Route 78 West off-ramp. The crash, which occurred just east of the off-ramp, involved an SUV and trailer carrying the loader, which appeared to have let loose from the truck that was towing it. The collision pushed both the trailer and SUV into a stone wall.

Officials confirmed that one person suffered minor but not life-threatening injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution. Officials closed Route 3 at Route 78 and Danielle Avenue during the response to address the fluid spill related to the accident.

The crash remains under investigation and further details were not released.
