STONINGTON — Local police, aided by a K-9 unit from the Westerly Police Department, searched for a man who stole cash from a West Broad Street business Friday morning. Police Capt. Todd Olson said the department was contacted shortly before noon with reports that a man had entered the Far Away Lamp Shop at 111 W. Broad St., grabbed money from the cash register, and fled on foot. The police established a perimeter, contacted Westerly for K-9 assistance, and searched the area. Olson said an officer was also assigned to the nearby West Broad Street School and the school was temporarily put on lockdown as a safety precaution. The neighborhood was cleared when no threat was found, and the lockdown was lifted, officials said, adding that parents had been notified by email.
