STONINGTON — Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries after a Dodge Grand Caravan and a Mazda Miata collided at the intersection of Routes 2 and 78.

Police said a preliminary investigation revealed that the owner of the Mazda, a woman, was trying to take a left turn from Route 78 onto Liberty Street around 12:45 p.m. when the collision occurred. Stonington police, Pawcatuck firefighters and members of the Westerly Ambulance Corps responded to the collision, which caused significant front-end damage to both vehicles.

The woman suffered significant, but not life-threatening, injuries and was taken by ambulance to Westerly Hospital, police said. The driver of the minivan, a teenager, was also taken to the hospital as a precaution, the officials said.

The accident forced police to shut down the road for nearly an hour as officials cleared debris, and Evans Mobil provided tow services to remove both vehicles. The road was reopened at approximately 1:45 p.m.

Further details of the incident, including the names of those involved, were not immediately available. Police said the accident remains under investigation.
