WESTERLY — Three area residents are facing charges after an early morning disturbance along the sand trail in Weekapaug when police said they got into a fight over a Jeep that got stuck in the sand as they were leaving a beachside bonfire.

Police said Aiyanna Lamphere, 20, and Kaleb Lamphere, 19, both of Westerly, and Austin Smith, 19, of Pawcatuck, were charged with disorderly conduct. Westerly Police Lt. Steven Johnson said only those involved in the physical altercation were charged.

Johnson said the department received calls just before 1 a.m. reporting that a fight involving a knife had broken out along the path that runs east of Spray Rock Road along the Weekapaug shoreline. Johnson said officers were told that the dispute centered around a 2015 Jeep Cherokee that was stuck along the trail. The vehicle was freed by the time officers arrived and no knife was found, the police said.

About a dozen people were on the scene when police arrived, Johnson said, and those present were cooperative with officers. He said those not involved in the fight were also warned to be careful regarding future gatherings.
