Stonington police say arrest is pending in armed robbery

STONINGTON — Stonington Police Capt. Todd Olson said Friday night that the department’s detective division had identified the person responsible for the armed robbery in town Thursday afternoon.

The robbery was reported at about 4:40 p.m., and a police bulletin issued at the time said that the crime, involving a suspect with a handgun, had taken place on Whewell Circle. The suspect was said to have fled in a pickup truck.

“After conducting an extensive investigation and with the assistance of the Westerly Police Department as well as their tactical team, a search warrant was serviced in Westerly that uncovered evidence associated with the robbery,” Olson said in a press release. “The individual responsible for the robbery was identified and a warrant is pending for his arrest.”

Olson said that the investigation had determined “that this criminal incident was not random.” He had earlier reported that there were no injuries.

He said the investigation was continuing. “Stonington and Westerly Police working in concert was critical to the successful outcome of this investigation,” Olson said. “I would like to acknowledge the efforts of all the officers involved in this investigation as it led to a speedy resolution of a very serious crime.”
