Model-maker to speak about the sloop Hero

STONINGTON — Model-maker Alan Burghardt will speak at the Captain Palmer House, 40 Palmer St., on Thursday, Aug. 21, at 5 p.m.

Burghardt will tell the story of the 47-foot Mystic-built sloop, Hero, that journeyed to Antarctica in 1820 as part of the 1812-14 fleet of privateers out of Mystic and Stonington.

Burghardt’s model of the Hero is the centerpiece of an exhibit about the career of Captain Nat Palmer at the Palmer House, a National Historic Landmark open to the public.

The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. For more information visit stoningtonhistory.org.
