Stonington walking tours include anecdotes, pop culture

STONINGTON — Guided walking tours of Stonington Borough sponsored by the Stonington Historical Society will be offered on Sunday at 2 p.m., weather permitting. The tours will start from the Old Lighthouse Museum, 7 Water St. Additional tours will be offered in July and August.

The tour will include anecdotes about sea captains, merchants, artists, writers, and others of the 19th and 20th centuries, whose homes still line the lanes of the village.

How the community developed, its neighborhoods, disasters, and current renaissance are explored in the hour-long program.

The tour highlights places that figured in the three-day bombardment by the British in 1814. Popular culture also figures into the tour including places associated with Hollywood films such as “Hope Springs” and “Mystic Pizza.”

The tour covers about one mile.

The tour is $10 per adult, $5 per student up to age 18. Tour-goers may also visit the Old Lighthouse Museum and the Capt. Palmer House for a combined admission of $15 for adults and $10 for students.

For more information, call 860-535-8445 or visit Stoningtonhistory.org.
