State Sen. Andrew Maynard suffers ‘serious fall’

STONINGTON — Stonington Police Captain Jerry Desmond confirmed Monday that Conn. state Sen. Andrew Maynard suffered a “serious fall” at 2:39 a.m. Monday at his home on Grandview Park, just outside the Borough.

He was initially taken to The Westerly Hospital and then transferred to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

A neighbor in the small enclave of homes on Grandview Park and Watch Hill Avenue just off Route 1A north of the Borough viaduct, said he was unaware of the details of the incident given the hour at which it occurred.

Police said one neighbor did witness the fall, however, and called police.

Maynard, 52, is the deputy majority leader of the State Senate, the chairman of the Transportation Committee and vice-chairman of the Committee on the Environment. He is also a member of the Appropriations and Education committees.

Maynard, who has served in office since 2006, serves the towns of Griswold, Groton, North Stonington, Plainfield, Preston, Sterling, Stonington and Voluntown.

Maynard, who was raised in Noank, was scheduled to hold public office hours Sunday at the Mystic Denison Farmers Market.

State Senate President Donald E. Williams Jr., D-Brooklyn, and Senate Majority Leader Martin M. Looney, D-New Haven, issued a statement early Monday regarding Maynard’s condition that said Maynard, “suffered an injury while at home over the weekend. Family members are with him now, at an area hospital, and are caring for him. His family is asking for privacy while he convalesces.”

Sen. Minority Leader John McKinney and Sen. Minority Leader Pro Tempore Len Fasano also issued a joint statement after learning Maynard was hospitalized that said, “The thoughts and prayers of the entire Connecticut State Senate Republican caucus go out to Senator Maynard and his family. We wish Sen. Maynard a swift recovery.”
