Accident that snarled traffic on Franklin Street is cleared

An accident on Franklin Street in Westerly snarled traffic along the busy thoroughfare and nearby side streets for more than an hour during the busy pre-holiday mid-day rush.

According to Westerly Police, a passenger car rear-ended a pickup truck, and the force from the collision sent the truck over the curb and rolled it over onto a pile of rocks.

Both drivers were transported via ambulance to The Westerly Hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

The accident happened at about 11 a.m. in the area of Midas Mufflers and Warehouse Liquors, and traffic was backed up on neighborhood streets as well as Wells Street and East Avenue. Drivers coming up Wells Street were forced to detour left onto Franklin Street away from the accident and back toward Granite Street.

The accident was cleared by 1 p.m.
