WESTERLY — A Charlestown man was seriously injured when the truck he was driving overturned on the Weekapaug Bridge this morning. The man was unresponsive when he was placed in a waiting Westerly Ambulance to be transported to a Lifestar helicopter that landed nearby in the parking lot of the Seaside Beach Club. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.
Emergency personnel on the scene found evidence of the man’s name, but declined to identify him because they had not yet notified his family of the crash.
Rescue units, police and fire department personnel were called to the scene at 7 a.m. and found a silver Toyota Tacoma overturned in the middle of the bridge pinning him in the crushed vehicle. Westerly and Misquamicut fire department personnel were on the scene with extrication equipment working to remove the man from the truck, which was lying on the passenger’s side, personal belongings strewn in the road. The top portion of a light pole on the bridge appeared to have been struck by the vehicle during the crash.
The injured man was traveling toward Weekapaug from Misquamicut when the crash occurred.
Westerly police and fire personnel remained on the scene to investigate the cause of the crash.
